Wind and dust warnings for North Central WA and Columbia Basin | Columbia Basin

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) office in Spokane, a wind advisory has been issued for parts of North Central Washington and a dust advisory is in effect for areas in the Columbia Basin. Both advisories go into effect at 11 a.m. Wednesday and last until 11 p.m.

The NWS warns that dust is common in agricultural areas this time of year, especially because the top layer of soil can easily be blown up by strong winds. Reduced visibility is expected, possibly dropping below a mile, putting drivers and equipment operators at risk. In addition, the dust can cause health problems for people with severe allergies or respiratory conditions.

Wind speeds are expected to reach 25 mph sustained, with gusts up to 40 mph or more. The wind warning affects areas such as the Wenatchee and Okanogan valleys, while the dust warning applies to the Upper Columbia Basin, Moses Lake and the Waterville Plateau.

A fast-moving cold front is responsible for the stormy conditions, with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms. Calmer weather is expected on Thursday.
