TMZ, which first reported the news, said Xol had “significant injuries” when he was discovered by police more than a week before his death.

Xol reportedly called police for help after he was stabbed and discovered in a Palm Springs apartment.

Police told TMZ that Xol was “in serious but stable condition” when he was taken to the hospital, where he died.

Richard Joseph Gonzales, a 34-year-old man from Cathedral City, California, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the incident, TMZ reported.

On the day Xol was found, Gonzales reportedly called police and claimed he had been the victim of an assault the night before.

After determining that Gonzales was a suspect, police took him to the John Benoit Detention Center in Indio, California. He is reportedly being held without bail and faces a murder charge.

In a statement to PEOPLE, Xol's family said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our beloved Eduardo Xol. As his family, we know his kindness touched the lives of so many.”

The statement continued: “We ask that this kindness be reciprocated at this time so that our privacy is respected while we process our grief. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in Eduardo's name to the Lupus Foundation of America, as he spent so much of his life serving others.”

Xol joined during the second season of ABC's “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (hosted by Ty Pennington), which premiered in 2004.

He left the show after season 8 in 2011.

Xol was also a singer and actor. According to his IMDb, he starred in several Televisa telenovelas in the 1990s, including “Acapulco, Cuerpo y Alma,” “Sentimientos Ajenos,” and “La Jaula de Oro.”

Xol's friend Richard Pérez-Fería honored the late star with an emotional Instagram post on September 22.

“It is almost unbelievable that I am writing this post to say goodbye to someone who was so present and so important in my life,” wrote Pérez-Fería. “When I first learned that Eduardo Xol had died, I was numb. It was impossible to process this information because it did not match my thousands of experiences with him.”

He continued, “Please don't ask me at this point how or why… what matters most is who he was: A talented, beautiful, passionate friend, brother, son and partner. The millions of laughs, hopes and secrets we shared remain in my thoughts. I want to honor my dear friend and celebrate his life as one that meant something to so many. To me, he certainly meant something.”

“I send healing love to his circle of friends and family who loved him so much during this terrible time,” Pérez-Fería added. “Unfortunately, we are not promised a tomorrow.”
