A Secret Service agent is accused of sexually harassing one of Kamala Harris's staff members in a hotel room.

The alleged incident occurred last week as a team of agents and Harris staff conducted preliminary planning and security work for a Sept. 20 event in Wisconsin that was later canceled, RealClearPolitics reports, citing four unnamed sources close to the Secret Service.

The agent in question and the Harris staff reportedly ate and drank together at a local restaurant and then returned to the staff member's room.

There, the agent is said to have forced himself on the woman and groped her. Others are said to have witnessed the incident. Those present in the room are said to have thrown the agent into the hallway, where he was allegedly so drunk that he lost consciousness.

“The U.S. Secret Service's Office of Professional Responsibility is investigating an allegation of misconduct by an employee,” a Secret Service spokesperson said in a statement to the news agency. “The Secret Service holds its personnel to the highest standards. The employee has been placed on leave pending the outcome of the investigation.”

Harris' campaign office also confirmed that it was aware of the allegation.

“We have zero tolerance for sexual misconduct,” it said The Guardian. “Senior OVP [Office of the Vice President] Officials have been notified by the USSS of an incident involving an agent and informed that the USSS has initiated an investigation.”

In the past, Secret Service agents have been accused of misconduct while traveling. For example, there was a scandal in 2012 when agents in Colombia took prostitutes to a hotel. In 2014, three agents protecting President Obama were sent home and suspended for drinking excessively during a trip to Amsterdam.

In recent months, the elite force has been under scrutiny for possible security vulnerabilities following several near-death threats against Donald Trump, including an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania and an alleged plot in Florida.

On Wednesday, a bipartisan Senate report accused the Secret Service of significant failures in planning and communication related to the recent incidents.

“[United States Secret Service] “Failures in planning, communications, security and resource allocation … were foreseeable, avoidable and directly related to the events leading up to the attack,” the report said.
