11-year-old allegedly brandished a weapon at Camas Middle School

An 11-year-old was accused of brandishing a gun at a Camas middle school, and a 50-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident for allegedly failing to store the weapon securely.

The incident occurred at Skyridge Middle School around 8:10 p.m. Tuesday, Camas police said. “Although this incident occurred on school property, it was not directly related to Skyridge Middle School activities,” officials wrote in a news release Wednesday.

Nobody was injured.

Camas police said that “multiple firearms and a knife were reportedly involved” and that the 11-year-old “was in possession of all of these weapons at various times during the altercation.”

Police identified the man responsible for the firearms as Kurt Hall and he was arrested on suspicion of endangering the public health due to second-degree improper storage of a firearm.

The police said they had forwarded the information about the eleven-year-old to the public prosecutor's office for investigation.

“We are very relieved that there were no injuries in this incident,” Camas Police Chief Tina Jones said in the release. “At this time, there is no indication of an ongoing threat to public safety related to this incident. The investigation is ongoing and we are working closely with the Camas School District administration, focusing on the safety of the school and the community.”

A series of threats and gunshots on campus have left students and teachers across the region on edge this week. A student was arrested Tuesday for allegedly spreading rumors about a shooting at Newport High School, while a 17-year-old was arrested for allegedly bringing a gun to Gresham High School on Friday. Also on Friday, “safety mode” was activated at Rex Putnam High in Milwaukie after a threat was scrawled in a bathroom.
