Suspect arrested after Centerville graduate shot dead with 4-year-old daughter in back seat

Investigators gathered information about the suspect and found him, whose name was not disclosed, in his home. Homicide detectives are continuing to investigate and will present charges to the public prosecutor's office, according to an update on X.

Lyle's boyfriend picked up an employee of a business near Dayton International Airport on Saturday, whose girlfriend and her young daughter were in the back seat. He was traveling south on Interstate 75 before taking the exit to U.S. 35 West around 7:10 a.m., Dayton police Maj. Brian Johns said.

“As he was taking the exit, he heard what he thought was a bang, but we now know it was a gunshot fired at the car,” Johns said. “After the gunshot went off, he heard his girlfriend screaming that she had been shot.”

Lyle was sitting behind the driver's seat. She died in the back seat, her daughter sitting next to her, Johns said.

After being shot, her boyfriend immediately drove to Miami Valley Hospital, where Lyle was pronounced dead.

“He has no idea why this happened. He has not reported any cases of road rage,” Johns said. “We don't know why the car was shot at.”

The driver of the vehicle recalled that as he continued on the highway, he saw a blue Chevrolet and a white vehicle behind him turning onto Germantown Avenue, the major said.

On Saturday morning, investigators blocked off the exit ramp to search for evidence and found a bullet casing on the right shoulder that Johns said was used in the murder.

“A bullet was fired and struck the trunk of our victim's vehicle. The bullet penetrated the back seat, struck our victim and killed him,” he said.

Lyle's family launched an online fundraiser to cover funeral expenses. As of Wednesday morning, $1,760 of the $6,500 goal had been raised.

This past weekend, a second homicide occurred on Sunday in a drive-by shooting in the 2900 block of Louella Avenue at around 4:30 p.m.

Five masked teenagers or young adults were driving a stolen 2015 white BMW when they approached a group of people and asked them to purchase marijuana.

“They came around the block again, came around the block again and opened fire on the group of people outside,” he said.

There have been 32 murders so far this year, which already exceeds the total for the past five years.
