Kamala Harris talks about her role at McDonald's during her college years: “That's one of the reasons why I…”

In her first one-on-one interview since being endorsed by President Joe Biden, Kamala Harris discussed her role at McDonald's while she was a student job. Following her speech at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, the vice president spoke with MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhle about her economic vision for the country and her former role at the fast-food giant.

Ruhle noted when talking about the economy that polls show voters still believe Donald Trump will be better on the economy. Harris responded that because of her background, she has more in common with the average American than the former president. Harris pointed out that she worked at McDonald's during her college years.

Harris was talking about serving hamburger buns when Ruhle asked, “Have you ever served two beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun at any point in your life…” Harris replied, “On a sesame seed bun?” before adding, “But it was no small task. For example, I made French fries.”

Harris then spoke more seriously about her former job. “One reason I even talk about working at McDonald's is because there are people in our country who work at McDonald's and are trying to support a family. I worked there as a student. I was a kid who worked there. I think part of the difference between me and my opponent is our perspective on the needs of the American people and our responsibility to meet those needs,” she said.

Elsewhere in the interview, Harris spoke about Trump's statement that he is a “protector” of women. The vice president told Ruhle that Trump's policies are actually “punishing women.” On Trump's record on overturning Roe V. Wade, Harris said, “I think we can all agree that because of his attitude toward women, he also selected three members of the Supreme Court of the United States who did what he intended, which was to undo the protections of Roe V. Wade.”

She added: “And now, in state after state, laws are being passed that punish women, laws that – I mean, just recently a heartbreaking story resulted in the death of a young woman, the mother of a six-year-old, heartbreaking stories. And that affects the listener, let alone his family.”
