19-year-old Utah Tech student died in accident that left two other people hospitalized

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Utah – Utah State Police are investigating a plane crash that left a 19-year-old Utah Tech student dead and two other 18-year-olds airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.

According to Utah State Parks, the accident occurred just outside of Snow Canyon State Park around 10 p.m. on Wednesday. The three victims were traveling in a Volkswagen Jetta on Snow Canyon Drive and were traveling at speeds between 70 and 100 miles per hour when they crashed.

The car sank 300 feet into the lava rock and landed in the parking lot of the Lava Flow Trailhead. State police said the two were wearing seat belts.

A 19-year-old man died at the scene of the accident. State police confirmed to FOX 13 News that he was a student at Utah Tech University. Two 18-year-old women were also found at the scene of the accident and taken to the hospital by helicopter in critical condition. It is not known whether they were also students at Utah Tech.

An accident reconstruction team is currently on site and is trying to obtain further information about the accident.
