Laplace man arrested over 40 times, rearrested and released on bail

A man who has been arrested over 40 times in St. John the Baptist Parish was arrested again on September 23. Sheriff Mike Tregre (treg) says this arrest is the result of an investigation by the St. John Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit that began in June 2024 and targeted Casey Spies for allegedly being involved in the distribution of methamphetamine in the parish.

“The hardest part of this job is cases like this. How does this man keep getting out? We keep arresting him.”

Spies' criminal record dates back to 2008 and includes charges such as aggravated and simple burglary, possession of methamphetamine and heroin, assault on police officers, false imprisonment, obscenity and theft. Tregre says the hardest part is keeping morale up for himself and his deputies…

“They're out here risking their lives, their safety, to catch a man we've captured many times before, and here we are and he's out again after three hours. That's the hardest part for me today, just trying to understand why this keeps happening.”

Judge Vercell Fiffie (Fee-Fee) set Spies' bail at $10,500, which he paid after posting a 10 percent bond of $1,050, leading to his release about two and a half hours later. Tregre says this is a recurring problem with Fiffie…

“There is a history with him and I'm not going to say much because there are cases going before the Supreme Court and I'm going to leave it at that.”

Spies was arrested at Sherman Walker Correctional Center for resisting an officer, possession of methamphetamine with intent to resell, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
