Teenage fugitive and accused car thief captured in Baton Rouge

17-year-old Carlos Taylor was arrested without incident.

NEW ORLEANS – After more than three days on the run since escaping custody of the Juvenile Justice Intervention Center and allegedly carjacking a 72-year-old woman on Monday, teenager Carlos Taylor was captured Thursday in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

According to the New Orleans Police Department, 17-year-old Taylor was arrested without incident on charges of simple carjacking and simple escape.

He is currently being held in Baton Rouge but will be returned to New Orleans to face those charges as well as those from his original arrest on September 17th.

  • Aggravated assault with a firearm
  • Illegal possession of a handgun by a juvenile
  • Illegal use of a weapon
  • Serious property damage

The arrest was made by U.S. Marshals with the help of the NOPD's Violent Offender Warrant Squad in searching for him.

WWL Louisiana spoke with the carjacking victim on Wednesday.

“I'm so happy to be alive,” Barbara Lane said after the immediate shock of being ambushed while waiting in the LSU Dental School parking lot on Monday.

Police said her attacker had just escaped from New Orleans Juvenile Court.

“And I’m sitting there thinking, ‘Oh my God, does he have a gun? He's going to shoot me, huh?'” she said. “My brain runs really, really fast.”

Lane said her attacker smeared her hands with his blood as he reached for her keys, which worried her even more. But the car thief wasn't done yet.

“I'm trying to get out of his way and he swerves the car and tries to hit me with it,” she explained.

Lane's car was found heavily damaged Tuesday.

A GoFundMe has been created to help Lane recover what was stolen.
