Man arrested for alleged road rage shooting

MILLCREEK – A man wanted in connection with a road rage shooting in Millcreek last weekend has been arrested.

Kenneth Alfonzo Richardson, 33, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Wednesday for investigation of shooting a person and aggravated assault.

According to a police affidavit, Richardson allegedly shot at a Toyota 4Runner near 4500 South and 1300 East on Sept. 21 while wearing a red bandana over his face. No injuries were reported.

“The arrested man committed a violent crime in a traffic accident against a stranger who was on his daily commute to work. “The suspect’s impulsive and violent actions demonstrate that Kenneth poses a significant danger to each individual and the community,” police wrote in their affidavit.

Uniform Police Sgt. Aymee Race says the victim told police before the shooting that he noticed Richardson driving aggressively behind him. As Richardson continued to follow the victim, he allegedly drove into the bike path at some point and attempted to cut the victim off by driving into him before firing a bullet, Race said. The victim continued driving after the shooting and was stopped by a Unified officer a short time later as he attempted to flee. When the victim told the officer what had happened, the traffic disturbance investigation began.

Officers returned to the area where the shot was allegedly fired and found a shell casing, the affidavit said.

Investigators learned that Richardson frequented a smoke shop in the area almost daily and was seen there before the shooting, the affidavit said. They were able to gather enough information to identify Richardson as a possible suspect and found the vehicle allegedly involved in the road rage incident parked at his home in Holladay, according to the affidavit.

On Wednesday, Richardson was stopped by police in Salt Lake City and found to have marijuana in his vehicle, as well as “an empty gun case for a 9mm handgun and a partially filled box of 9mm ammunition,” reports said in the affidavit.

A red hoodie that matched the one worn by the suspected shooter in the Sept. 21 shooting was also found, police said. What allegedly led Richardson to chase the other driver was still under investigation Thursday.

According to court records, Richardson was convicted of aggravated assault in 2018. In that case, Richardson had worked at Dunford Bakery for three days but became angry and aggressive when told how to perform his duties, according to charging documents. After being asked to leave, Richardson threatened to shoot one employee and slash another with a knife, the charges say.
