Couple arrested after trying to sell child for six-pack of beer ($1,000) in Arkansas

According to our content partner 40/29 News, two people have been arrested and accused of trying to sell their two-month-old baby for a six-pack of beer and $1,000 at a Hide-A-Way campground in Benton County.

A probable cause report states that the Benton County Sheriff's Office arrested Darien Urban, 21, and Shalene Ehlers, 20, the baby's parents. They are now accused of endangering the welfare of a minor and attempting to obtain consideration for giving a minor up for adoption.

Officials say the baby is now in the care of the Arkansas Department of Human Services.

Documents show campground officials responded after receiving calls saying the parents of a 2-month-old baby were trying to sell the child for a six-pack of beer and a $1,000 cashier's check. The caller also stated that the baby needed medical attention.

When officers arrived on scene, they discovered that the parents were not at the campsite. The baby was then taken to a hospital.

An affidavit said witnesses provided investigators with a letter stating the parents intended to transfer their rights to the child. A witness also had cell phone video of the couple signing the letter.

According to 40/29, witnesses said the baby was given to someone at the campsite in exchange for beer. The baby was later given to another person in exchange for money, but no payment was made.

In an interview, Urban and Ehlers said that their baby was with the person who “adopted” them.
