Student recovers after drug incident at Killeen school | crime

Hospital officials told the parents that the substance their child had ingested was marijuana, the parents told the Herald.

In the hours after the incident, KISD police notified the child's father that an investigation was underway.

Additionally, Killeen ISD spokeswoman Karen Rudolph forwarded the message sent to parents and guardians of Manor students about the incident and confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.

The parents said they received a call from KISD police to inquire about the child and confirm that they had indeed located the juvenile who gave their child the marijuana gummy candy.

The student's mother decided Thursday to keep the child home, but said that would be the plan if the child was well enough to return to school Friday.

Some of the unanswered questions from this student's parents include: How did the schoolmate get the illegal substance? How did they bring it to school and were other students offered gummy bears?

An email from Rudolph said. “I cannot share information about specific students, but I would refer you to our Student Code of Conduct. I would also like to reiterate that we want to work with families to encourage students to be aware of their surroundings and to “say something when they see something.” For example, if they see something suspicious, they should speak to a trusted adult or file an anonymous alert at www.KISDisSafe.com.”

When asked whether there may have been other students who were given or ingested marijuana, Rudolph said, “I am only aware of one student who was given and ingested a banned substance.”

Rudolph also suggested looking at the KISD Student Code of Conduct for the procedure in place for dealing with such situations.

“Students may not possess, consume, give away or sell alcohol or illegal drugs,” the code states.

A student must be placed in a Disciplinary Alternative Education Program (DAEP) if the student sells, gives, or delivers a controlled substance or dangerous drug in any quantity to another person, or possesses, uses, or is under the influence of such substance or dangerous drug is a crime.

Transfer to a DAEP is made by the district hearing officer. If a student is suspended for a DAEP violation, the campus conduct coordinator or appropriate administrator must schedule a hearing with the student's parents, the student, and the district hearing officer within five school days. At the district hearing, the district hearing officer or appropriate administrator must provide the student with: 1) oral or written information about the reasons for the removal; 2) an explanation of the reasons for the removal; and 3) an opportunity to respond to the reasons for removal.

According to the Code, when determining whether a student should be placed in a DAEP, regardless of whether the measure is mandatory or voluntary, the district hearing officer must consider the following:

Intention or lack of intent at the time of the student's behavior

The student's disciplinary history

A disability that significantly impairs the student's ability to assess the student's misbehavior,

The status of a student in the Conservatory of the Department of Family and Protective Services (Foster Care) or

A student's homeless status
