4-year-old girl dies in Catawba County crash during heavy rain

According to the NC State Highway Patrol, a 2008 GMC Acadia crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2022 GMC Yukon Thursday morning.

CLAREMONT, N.C. – A 4-year-old girl has died and three other children are in the hospital after a two-vehicle collision in Catawba County Thursday morning.

The NC State Highway Patrol said the crash occurred just after 8 a.m. on Boggs Road near Hunsucker Drive. Police said a 2008 GMC Acadia crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 2022 GMC Yukon. The accident occurred in heavy rain.

The driver of the Acadia was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Two minor passengers were taken to area hospitals. A 4-year-old was killed in the accident and another child suffered life-threatening injuries.

Three people were also in Yukon and were taken to hospital. The driver and a child both suffered non-life-threatening injuries. A second child has life-threatening injuries.

The highway patrol said impairment did not contribute to the crash. Possible charges are still pending.

There was heavy rainfall and isolated flash flooding at the time of the incident.
