Caught on camera: School bus fight between parents, students and driver in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) — Colorado Springs police are helping investigate a fight on a District 20 bus between a parent, a middle school student and a bus driver, all of which was caught on video.

Witnesses say the mother got on the bus after an argument between two students, which led to threats against an 11-year-old and beatings on the bus driver.

The parent of the student who captured the cellphone video told KRDO13 it was just after 4:15 p.m. Tuesday afternoon when a D20 bus full of Mountain Ridge middle school students encountered a chaotic scene at the bus stop when a parent arrived on board and threatened a student before coming into contact with the bus driver.

In the video, a parent in a black shirt is seen arguing with and throwing punches at the bus driver, who has his back to the camera and is wearing sunglasses.

In the video, he can be heard repeatedly telling the woman, “You’re not allowed on the bus,” while taking punches and fending her off.

When Rafeal Madureira watches the video recorded by his daughter, he leaves, worried about safety on public transport.

“She called her mom and said, ‘Mom, I’m scared. And that's the problem. When your child calls you at school and says, 'Mom, I'm scared.' You fear the worst, and that’s the problem, right there,” Madureira said

D20 issued the following statement regarding the incident.

Academy District 20 is working with Colorado Springs Police to investigate this case, particularly those who entered the bus without permission. District 20 does not comment on the ongoing police investigation.

However, District 20 would like to share that all employees, including bus drivers, have a duty to protect the students they serve and that our bus driver acted appropriately to remove individuals who were not authorized to board the bus and to to protect the students he looks after.

Although we cannot announce explicit disciplinary actions due to the need to protect student privacy, we can share that appropriate measures will be taken to ensure that student safety remains a top priority.

D20 added over the phone: “Our D20 security team has taken appropriate action due to the adult situation.”

The bus driver who got caught up in the matter will not face any disciplinary action. In fact, after reviewing video of the incident, D20 says that as a D20 employee, the driver acted appropriately to protect his students and turn away people who were not allowed on the bus.
