Staunton woman arrested after dogs found dead in apartment

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) – Staunton police arrested Kimberley Shepard after two dogs were found dead in her home.

SPD received a tip from a concerned resident on September 21 that Shepard was harboring deceased animals. After receiving the information, SPD officers went to Shepard's apartment to question her, but she was not there when officers arrived. According to court documents, police contacted her at a separate apartment.

According to an affidavit, officers spoke with Shepard and had them take a look inside the home. Officers allegedly found a small dog dead on the ground within sight of the front door. After SPD arrested her, court documents show she admitted to having two dead dogs in the apartment but did not know when they died. She believed one died within a week of the arrest and another about two weeks before SPD found them.

According to responding officers, the apartment was in “disarray.” Shepard is scheduled to appear in Staunton General District Court on Wednesday.
