Battle at Schererville Y; Bond Reduction Denied for Man Accused of Hitting Woman with Weapon; and Hobart man charged with drunkenness in argument

Fight at the Schererville YMCA

An Illinois man is charged in connection with a fight at the Schererville YMCA on Sept. 7 following a “heated” basketball game.

Montrell L. Thomas, 19, of Sauk Village, is charged with battery causing serious bodily injury. He has not been arrested and is being held without bail.

An affidavit states that after the game, Thomas threw a cell phone in the victim's face, causing him to knock his arm away before a brief fight ensued. Thomas knocked the victim down, punching and stomping on his head.

Bond denies charges against man who allegedly beat woman with weapon

A judge declined Thursday to reduce the bail of a man accused of hitting his girlfriend with a gun, nearly escaping a standoff with police.

Joshua Lascola, 35, is charged with three counts of criminal confinement, three counts of domestic violence, one count of intimidation and two counts of criminal recklessness.

The victim testified on Thursday that she did not want the criminal proceedings to be initiated. She said she would be willing to sell a car to help him make bail and get out of jail.

His bail remains $9,000 cash. A jury trial is scheduled for December.

Gary police responded to the 3500 block of Burr Street in the Black Oak neighborhood on August 24.

The woman fled to a neighbor's house and told police that Lascola beat her, held her against her will and got into a “gunfight” with officers. She had a noticeable cut on her head and a bruise on her arm.

A few minutes after officers set up a cordon, Lascola exited the home in the 3600 block of Burr Street and was arrested without incident.

Hobart man charged with drunken affray

A Hobart man is accused of beating his long-term friend during a night of drinking.

Uriel Segovia, 38, was charged Monday with aggravated assault, two counts of assault and a misdemeanor. His bail is $3,500 cash.

His next court date is October 1st.

Hobart Police responded to the 200 block of California Street around 2:21 p.m.

Court records show Segovia struck the victim about three times on Sept. 21. They had been drinking that night and the victim tried to bait him with “past arguments” to goad him into fighting, the affidavit states.

The victim may lose some vision in one eye, doctors said.
