NRL news: Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam at the center of investigations into alleged incident in Bali

The NRL investigates an alleged incident involving Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam in Bali, just hours after The Brisbane Broncos announced the departure of coach Kevin Walters. The Broncos were rocked by further drama on Friday when it emerged the NRL integrity unit had launched an investigation into an alleged incident involving Walsh and Mam.

The Broncos players are holidaying in Bali after finishing 12th and missing the NRL finals this year. The NRL has reportedly received a complaint about Walsh and Mam's behavior and the integrity unit is now investigating.

The complaint allegedly relates to damage caused to a third party's mobile phone. One person reportedly tried to take a selfie with Walsh when Mam became upset about it.

The Courier mail reported that the Broncos are aware of the matter and have learned that the players allegedly responded to being filmed while on vacation. The same report said the players replaced the damaged phone and paid for a new one.

Earlier this year, Walsh used social media to urge fans to be more respectful when treating players. “If you are over 10 years old, and especially if you are a fully grown adult, and don't use your manners when asking for a photo, don't be shocked if you get a no,” he wrote on Instagram.

“At the end of the day we are human, just (don’t) expect these things!! I love taking photos and chatting with everyone, but if you just shove a phone in my face and demand a photo, I won't want to do that!! “Please and thank you” goes a long way! I wish you a wonderful day.”

The alleged incident comes at the worst possible time for the Broncos, who are looking for a new head coach. The club announced this on Thursday evening Walters would relinquish the role he has held since 2021after missing the finals in three of four seasons as coach.

“I’m really proud that the club wasn’t in great shape when I arrived. “I feel like myself, along with a lot of other good staff and people here, have left my mark on the club,” Walters said while leading the media on Friday.

“I would like to thank the original owners of the club, Barry, Paul, Steve and Gary, for establishing the club. Probably the proudest moment was the grand finale last year, which was attended by my son and my whole family. I want to say thank you.” My family has been really great to me and I just want to thank them.

CEO Dave Donaghy said: “The reality for us is that as an organisation, as a club, we recognize that we can be better. We can do better. Kev wears his heart on his sleeve and he's done an incredible job over the last four years, but since we've had time to digest and process the season, look at the plans for the future, we're both at the “I came to the realization that it was time to part ways and that Kev's time as head coach was over.”
