Reece Walsh and Ezra Mam investigate the incident in Bali

Mam has since paid for a replacement phone.

“The damaged phone was simply an accident in a busy nightclub in Bali,” the couple's manager, Nash Dawson, told the Herald.

“One person’s phone was dropped and damaged. This person asked the player to pay for the damage and the player has already paid it.”

News of the incident came on an already dramatic day for the Broncos, after former coach Kevin Walters appeared in front of the media for the first time since announcing his separation from the club. Walters had another two years under contract, but after a disappointing twelfth place, the parties agreed to cut ties.

As well as appointing a new coach, the club is also dealing with suggestions that the players' off-field popularity is becoming a diversionary tactic. The courier post has reported that extra security guards were deployed to supervise players outside of practice and that Walsh once returned to his Dodge Ram after a practice session to find a female fan sitting in his vehicle holding flowers and a gift.

Walters' departure comes just 12 months after he led the Broncos to the grand final, a game they came agonizingly close to winning before Penrith centre-back Nathan Cleary orchestrated a remarkable comeback victory.

A tearful Walters, who will remain with the Broncos as an ambassador, spoke for less than two minutes while addressing reporters at Red Hill.

“I was fortunate to play here as a player and I was also an assistant coach here for the last four years as head coach, so my time here has been very enjoyable,” Walters said.

“I have to say that I had a lot of good times here. Like everyone, you have dry moments and there are moments when you learn and get better. That has definitely been the case for me over the last four years.”

Broncos CEO David Donaghy on Friday dismissed claims that Walters had lost the locker room or that the players had not accepted their share of responsibility for reaching just one finals series during his tenure. However, he provided little information about the evaluation or his expectations for a replacement coach.

“I think the reality for us is that we recognize that as an organization and as a club we can be better, we can do better,” Donaghy said.

“We will have those discussions internally first and then put the pieces together to make sure that we continue to build the pieces that Kev has created here over the last four years next year.”
