Giants QB depth chart: Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito battle to be Daniel Jones' top backup

After a torn ACL cut his 2023 season short, Daniel Jones is back at full strength as the Giants' starting quarterback.

While Jones had some ups and downs throughout his career, he was able to lead the franchise to the playoffs in his final full season. The 27-year-old returns with a new target in first-round WR Malik Nabers, who has already made several highlight plays.

Jones has seemingly shaken off the rust in his return to action, but New York is still taking a cautious approach with its franchise QB. Should Jones need a reprieve, the Giants have taken steps to ensure their QB room has enough support.

Giants QB depth chart

Daniel Jones

Jones, the No. 6 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, is in his sixth season as New York's starting QB. Jones took over from Eli Manning, taking over from the two-time Super Bowl champion in Week 3 of the 2019 season.

After leading New York to the NFC Divisional Round in 2022, Jones signed a four-year, $160 million contract to remain with the franchise through at least the 2026 season. Injuries marred Jones' 2023 season and a torn ACL marked the end of his season.

After playing in just six games last year, Jones is back under center and looking to lead New York back to the postseason. Through the first three weeks of the 2024 season, he has thrown for 600 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions.

Drew Lock

Lock signed with the Giants as a free agent in March, joining the franchise after two seasons in Seattle. He is listed as a backup on New York's depth chart.

Like Jones, Lock is a member of the 2019 draft class. After being taken 42nd overall in 2019, Lock went 4-1 in five starts as a rookie – his best season as a Bronco. Lock was sent to the Seahawks as part of the Russell Wilson trade, but lost the QB competition to Geno Smith.

After just two appearances in Seattle, Lock is now tasked with the role of primary backup to Jones.

Tommy DeVito

New Jersey native DeVito was a phenomenon during the 2023 season.

Jones' injuries thrust DeVito into the spotlight, where he posted a 3-3 record as a starter, captivating New York fans. As an undrafted rookie in 2023, DeVito completed 114 passes for 1,101 yards, including eight touchdowns and just three picks.

It's possible he could overtake Lock at some point this year, but for now, “Tommy Cutlets” is merely the emergency QB.
