St Mirren have suspended defender Shaun Rooney over an “alleged incident” in Glasgow city center.

The Scottish Premiership team said the player had disclosed his involvement in the reported incident, details of which have not yet been released.

A full investigation is underway and Rooney has since been suspended as a “precautionary measure”.

In a statement on Thursday, the Paisley club said: “St Mirren Football Club has today suspended Shaun Rooney as a precautionary measure after he disclosed to the club his involvement in an alleged incident earlier in the year.” Glasgow Downtown last week.

“The club will now carry out a full investigation into this incident and will make no further comment during this process.”

Rooney began his career in Dundee United's youth team and played for a number of teams including Dunfermline Athletic, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and St Johnstone.

The 28-year-old returned to Scottish football this summer after signing a two-year contract with Fleetwood Town in Lancashire, England – where former Celtic captain Scott Brown was manager for a spell.
