Maine man arrested en masse in connection with Bangor murder

Police in Massachusetts have arrested a Maine man in connection with the death of a woman on Larkin St. in Bangor earlier this week.

Det. Sergeant. Tim Shaw with the Bangor Police Department says 42-year-old Richard Thorpe of Bangor was taken into custody today. Authorities believe Thorpe is responsible for the murder of 39-year-old Virginia Cookson, also of Bangor.

“As a result of an investigation by the Bangor Police Department Criminal Investigation Division in cooperation with the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Maine, an arrest warrant has been issued for Richard Keith Thorpe, DOB: 10/4/81, of Bangor, Maine, for the murder of Richard Thorpe earlier today Pittsfield, Massachusetts arrested by the Pittsfield, MA Police Department.

A colleague of Cookson's reported that she went missing when she failed to show up for work earlier in the week. Bangor police officers found her body at a home on Larkin Street around 9 a.m. Wednesday.

An autopsy conducted by the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta determined that Cookson died as a result of homicide.
