Jenkintown woman charged with double murder of her parents is expected to plead guilty under agreement with prosecutors

Verity A. Beck, 45, of Jenkintown, who is accused of fatally shooting and dismembering her elderly parents in January 2023, has apparently reached a deal with prosecutors. The morning call reported.

Although the details of the plea deal have not been made public, the deal suggests that Beck has abandoned her earlier intention to plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

Beck will appear in a Montgomery County courtroom on Sept. 30, when her case “is scheduled for a guilty plea,” according to an order issued Thursday by a Montgomery County judge. Her double murder trial was expected to begin next month.

Beck is charged with two counts each of first- and third-degree murder and two counts of abuse of corpse, as well as two counts of possession of criminal instruments, specifically a firearm and a chainsaw, in connection with her parents' deaths.

Defense attorneys previously filed an insanity claim against Beck, claiming she suffered from “such lack of reason, from mental illness, that she was ignorant of the nature and quality of the act she was doing or doing.” I doesn’t know that what she did was wrong,” she said Call said.

If Beck pleads guilty to first-degree murder, she could face life in prison. A conviction of third-degree murder carries a maximum sentence of 20 to 40 years in prison.

In December 2023, court documents suggested that the motive for the murders was Beck's “financial problems” when she was “confronted by her elderly parents about stealing from them.”

According to pre-trial documents, Beck had recently filed for bankruptcy for a total of $114,059 and was “caught making unauthorized purchases using her father's bank card.”
