Dame Maggie Smith's career on stage, film and television spanned seven decades.

The actress, who died on September 27, 2024 at the age of 89, made her stage debut in 1952 and had an extensive acting career over the following decades, earning her numerous awards, including two Oscars and a Tony. She was incredibly versatile, playing everything from Shakespeare to biting comedies to British aristocracy to quirky southern belles.

In her first film role, credited according to IMDB, Smith starred opposite George Nadar in 1958's Nowhere to Go.

After her 1964 appearance as Desdemona in Shakespeare's Othello The two starred opposite Laurence Olivier at the Royal National Theater in the 1965 film adaptation, which earned them both Oscar nominations.

In addition to her extensive work in film and on stage, Smith has also appeared on television a number of times, including in “ Downton Abbey from 2010-2015. She also reprized her role as Violet Grantham in the 2019 and 2022 films.

In 2018, she appeared as herself alongside other British actresses who had been given the title of “Dame” (Judi Dench, Eileen Atkins and Joan Plowright) as they reminisced about their careers and shared some light-hearted banter.

Smith continued to work in films into her 80s, with her final appearance coming in 2023 The Miracle Club.
