North Carolina is in imminent danger of a dam collapsing due to Hurricane Helene, according to local officials.

The National Weather Service (NWS) on Friday morning urged residents to immediately evacuate to a safe location due to flash flooding that overtopped Lake Lure Dam in Rutherford County.

“URGENT: FLOOD EMERGENCY FOR LAKE LURE DAM!” wrote the NWS on X (formerly Twitter). “DAM FAILURE IMPACT! Residents below the dam must be evacuated to higher ground immediately!”

At least 25 people were killed Monday morning after Category 4 Hurricane Helene slammed into Florida, hitting the West Coast in “unsurvivable” conditions before moving inland.
