Leonardtown man arrested for assault, unregistered loaded handgun recovered

LEONARDTOWN, Md – St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office patrol officers arrested Davonn Lionell Atkins, 25, of Leonardtown, on Thursday, September 26, 2024, on an outstanding warrant for first-degree assault and seized an unregistered handgun.

Acting on a tip about Atkins' whereabouts, officers were patrolling the area of ​​Sunnyside Road and Pin Cushion Road in Leonardtown when they spotted Atkins behind the wheel of a vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. After arresting Atkins on the outstanding warrant, officers searched his car and found an unregistered loaded handgun. Further investigation revealed that Atkins did not have permission to carry the weapon.

Atkins was transported to the St. Mary's County Detention and Rehabilitation Center. He is charged with carrying, carrying and transporting a handgun, having a loaded handgun on his person, possessing a loaded handgun in a vehicle and carrying, carrying and transporting a handgun on a public road.
