Hulaween details on the Bobby Weir incident, shared sets with The String Cheese Incident

October 24-27, Hulaween returns to the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park in Live Oak, Florida for another rousing edition of the beloved American tradition of combining a multi-genre musical program with a communal camping experience under the Florida sun . This year's 11th annual occasion is headlined by resident festival accomplices The String Cheese Incident, who have signed on to perform three nights of headlining sets or incidents, in addition to a unique crossover with Grateful Dead guitarist/original member Bobby Weir.

Titled “The Bobby Weir Incident,” the upcoming collaborative delivery will mark the first time a member of the Grateful Dead has taken part in a rerun of Hulaween. It also marks Weir's debut sit-in on The String Cheese Incident, although he shares a shared affinity with John Barlow's lyrics, including co-authorship with mandolinist/vocalist Michael Kang on “Desert Dawn”. During Hulaween, the combined line-up will perform two 90-minute sets guided by the shared improvisational approach of letting the music live and evolve in the moment.

In String Cheese Incident's latest Relix interview, culminating in our September 2024 issue, editor-in-chief Dean Budnick asked the members about their upcoming Hulaween performances with Weir. Michael Travis said: “It is an incredible honor to be associated with Bobby. It's so deeply satisfying and amazing to be able to play a show with him and be included in this musical conversation.” Kang added his own feelings about the upcoming musical experience and discussed the Grateful Dead's extensive collection: “Obviously it is Great songbook. We also have a personal connection through our old friend John Perry Barlow, who passed away a few years ago. JPB and I were very close and of course Bobby was very close to him too. I think it will be very cool.”

Michael Berg, co-founder and owner of Hulaween, shared Relix“As long-time Deadheads, we are thrilled to welcome Bobby Weir to Hulaween in the grandest way possible!” A first and unique collaboration between Bobby and our host band, The String Cheese Incident as The Bobby Weir Incident, will be the sing-along evening The one we all needed to cap off this year's festival season was the 11th annual Hulaween. Another Hula co-founder, my brother Paul Levine, hosted shows with Bobby's Rat Dog early in his career in the late '90s. However, this is the first time I have officially welcomed him to one of our curated events.”

Berg concluded by addressing the uniqueness of what is to come: “The Grateful Dead's monumental impact on our culture and community cannot be measured, so after more than three decades of celebration, “honored” is an understatement, and the word “special.” ” just scratches the surface. This will be an unforgettable moment for Hula, SCI and of course for Paul, me and the rest of our partners and team.”
