College Avenue is preparing for Oktoberfest

APPLETON (WLUK) — Appleton's biggest block party of the year is back.

The Oktoberfest weekend begins with the License to Cruise.

“For me it’s about the stories. Around the avenue, around cars. We keep 300 to 400 cars on the avenue,” said Gary Rohde, License to Cruise Information Manager.

The “Mile of Fun since 1981” takes place on College Avenue.

This is Kevin's second year at the class auto show.

Since his youth, he has clung to the 69-foot Roadrunner model.

“Plymouth paid Warner Brothers $50,000 for the Roadrunner emblem and name in the 1960s. And they spent an additional $10,000 developing the horn,” says Kevin.

After 30 patient years, he finally got his hands on it a few years ago.

“A lot of people come up to me and say, 'Ah, my dad had this car when I was younger, or I had this car when I was younger.'

Starting in 1990, the family-friendly automobile show continued the tradition of cruising down the avenue.

He said it was a grown man's hobby.

“Seeing all the cars out here, showing my car and teaching people something. Young people in particular are told everything about the car. And hopefully they get into cars.”

Although he didn't restore it himself, he is working on it with his son.

He hopes to see the same cars on the road in 20 years.

“My 18-year-old already claimed it”

The annual indoor collection features are shown at the Fox Cities Expo Center.
