The Jasper County Sheriff's Office releases bodycam footage from the incident in Rhyker Earl

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office has released bodycam footage of officers' response to a Sept. 8 medical call involving Rhyker Earl, 26. The sheriff's office says it received permission from the Indiana State Police to release the footage while the investigation continues. The footage posted on the Jasper County Sheriff's Office – Indiana YouTube channel includes unedited videos from three different officers, as well as a fourth video that combines the footage.

The videos appear to show Earl standing up and trying to put on a shirt while berating paramedics as the first deputy arrives. But Earl's confrontation with the paramedic seemed to become physical.

The deputy ordered Earl not to touch the paramedic, to lie on the ground and to put his hands behind his back. The rescue workers seemed to spend the next few minutes holding Earl down as Earl yelled at them to stop, fearing he was dying.

The videos also appear to show emergency workers repeatedly injecting Earl with sedatives, noting how little effect they appeared to have. Meanwhile, his grandmother appeared to join the emergency responders, urging Earl to calm down and reassuring him that they were trying to help him.

After a few minutes, Earl seemed unresponsive. But as emergency responders prepared to carry him out of the house and take him to the hospital, she and her family members noticed that he looked blue and didn't seem to be breathing. The rescue workers then began chest compressions.

Earl's family said he was taken off life support two days later after tests confirmed he no longer had brain activity.

The sheriff's office says it is “not drawing any conclusions about the actions of all individuals involved in this incident.” That is left to the investigation. However, she believes it is crucial that the community has as much information as possible “and can evaluate the incident independently of external influences.”
