Deputy injured in shooting in National City – NBC 7 San Diego

A large police force remained on scene on Mile of Cars Way in National City, hours after an incident Friday afternoon in which a witness told NBC 7 they believed they heard multiple gunshots.

A San Diego Police Department watch commander confirmed to NBC 7 that the incident was an officer-involved shooting.

At least half a dozen police vehicles, many with San Diego Sheriff's Department logos, were still parked near the intersection with Hoover Avenue as of 4 p.m., and National City police officers were also on the scene. At least three officers were seen searching a white Honda for quite some time, and there appears to be a second scene involving a flatbed truck not far away.

Authorities said a deputy was injured in the incident, which occurred around 2 p.m., and was taken to UC San Diego Hillcrest Medical Center, but did not provide details on his condition.

Witnesses who were getting groceries nearby at the time of the shooting told NBC 7 they probably heard at least five gunshots. They also said they saw a woman in the Honda being held at gunpoint and that officers continued to point their firearms at the vehicle afterward.

Through an interdepartmental agreement, the San Diego Police Department will conduct the investigation as representatives from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department were involved.
