Hurricane Helene's impact on college football: Appalachian State-Liberty canceled, Stanford-Clemson appears to be a try

Hurricane Helene made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane Thursday evening, and we could see some changes to the college football schedule over the weekend as affected programs work out alternative plans. The hurricane that formed in the Caribbean Sea on Tuesday has wreaked havoc in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas, leaving millions without power.

It was announced Friday that the Appalachian State-Liberty game scheduled for Saturday was canceled. It will not be made up for. Appalachian State University is located in Boone, North Carolina, near the Tennessee state line. The video showed severe flooding in the city center.

The ACC matchup between Stanford and No. 17 Clemson was initially in jeopardy after Stanford's flight was canceled on Thursday. According to ESPN's Andrea Adelson, Stanford was sitting on the tarmac Thursday before the flight to South Carolina was canceled. After some rescheduling, the Cardinal then took off on Friday afternoon. As of Friday, the game had not been officially canceled or postponed.

As for other potential college football impacts, the Florida Gators have an off week so they don't have to worry about hurricane planning. Florida State plays SMU in Dallas on Saturday night. So their play is not expected to be affected, but their travel plans could potentially be affected.

But there are several home games in Florida this weekend: UCF hosts Colorado in Orlando on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET and the Miami Hurricanes host Virginia Tech on Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Even though the storm has weakened in strength after traveling inland toward Tennessee, the weather there is still expected to be brutal.

Georgia also travels to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET, another game that could be impacted by the storm for both the teams and fans traveling to the game.

Currently, none of those games have been postponed, but one has: Florida A&M University vs. Alabama A&M. This competition has been postponed to November 29th.
