Teen faces charges in fatal shooting of 15-year-old in Greater Grand Crossing

A teenager has been arrested in the fatal shooting of 15-year-old Phillip Mitchell in July, according to Chicago police.

The 17-year-old was arrested on Thursday and now faces charges of first-degree murder, police said. Earlier on the day of the shooting, a 16-year-old was taken into custody a few blocks from the crime scene and questioned by police before being released.

According to Mitchell's mother, Racquel Bussell, he had just left work and was on his way to Sunny's Sub restaurant with his cousin and a friend for dinner and some snacks when he was fatally shot on July 10.

According to a police report, an argument occurred in the 7100 block of South King Drive around 5:40 p.m. Two people approached Phillip on the sidewalk. The suspect allegedly pushed Phillip and a second person shot him at close range, hitting him at least once in the head.

Officers responding to a ShotSpotter alert found Phillip in the middle of the street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body. He was taken to Comer Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:13 p.m., police and the Cook County medical examiner's office said.

The 17-year-old suspect is due in court on Saturday.
