Mark Robinson was treated for burns following a campaign incident, the campaign confirms

Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson “is currently being treated for burns,” his communications director confirmed to NBC News on Friday evening.

“Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson is currently being treated for burns following an incident at a campaign rally in Mt Airy. He’s in good spirits,” said Mike Lonergan, communications director for the Robinson campaign.

Lonergan was responding to a question from NBC News about a NewsNation report that said the North Carolina candidate was hospitalized.

Details of the incident are unclear.

Robinson was scheduled to speak during a Faith & Freedom event in North Carolina on Saturday, but an event organizer said Friday evening that the event had to be canceled, pointing out that the venue had no power. Hurricane Helene caused devastating damage in parts of North Carolina, particularly in the western region of the state where the event was scheduled to take place.

The incident came just days after a shocking CNN report that claimed the lieutenant governor made anti-Semitic and racist comments on a porn website years ago.

In the days after the story broke, four senior staffers from the embattled Republican's campaign resigned, although the campaign did not link the departures to the report.

Robinson remained defiant in the face of the allegations, even as some Republicans expressed concern about the report. Robinson has denied the allegations.

The Harris campaign has tried to link Robinson to former President Donald Trump, who had endorsed him before the CNN report was released, hoping the controversy surrounding Robinson's candidacy will help Democrats swing the state bring to. Trump narrowly won North Carolina in 2020, and Republicans have acknowledged it would be difficult for them to win the White House without the state.
