Eduardo Rodriguez of the Diamondbacks will pitch against the Padres on Saturday

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced that Eduardo Rodriguez will start Saturday's Game 2 against the San Diego Padres as the team is now on the outside looking for one of the two remaining NL Wild Card spots.

The southpaw starter hit three home runs against the San Francisco Giants on Monday while also striking out eight batters in a 6-3 loss. He lasted just 4.2 innings, walking three of them on 103 pitches.

In nine starts, Rodriguez has posted a 5.56 ERA and has broken the sixth-inning threshold in just one of those appearances, an 11-strikeout game against the Colorado Rockies on September 18.

After the Atlanta Braves defeated the Kansas City Royals 3-0 and lost to the New York Mets, Arizona is in a three-way battle for the final two wild card spots. However, the D-Backs lose both tiebreakers with the other two playoff contenders.

Ryne Nelson will be available for bullpen work after being activated from the 15-day injured list on Thursday. With a large portion of the D-backs' relievers used in a 5-3 loss on Friday and Ryan Thompson, AJ Puk and Kevin Ginkel each pitching an inning, Nelson could provide some much-needed length for a must-win game must be won.

The Padres named right-hander Randy Vasquez (4-7, 5.18 ERA) as their Game 2 starter.
