Jose Cruz, who was convicted as a teenager of the 2011 Reno murder, has died

Jose Cruz, who became Nevada's youngest inmate at age 13 when he was convicted of murder, has died in prison.

Cruz, 26, was serving a life sentence for second-degree murder in the May 2011 shooting death of 27-year-old Steve Gale on California Avenue in Reno. The shooting culminated a crime spree that stretched from Carson City to Reno.

Cruz died Sept. 16 at High Desert State Prison in Indian Springs, the Nevada Department of Corrections said in a news release. No reason was given and an autopsy was requested.

In 2011, Cruz and three others were arrested after a series of armed robberies and other crimes that lasted several hours on May 7-8. The rampage ended with the murder of Gale.
