Hickory man killed, 4 others injured in Conover crash

CONOVER, NC (WBTV) – One man was killed and four others were injured in a crash in Conover late Friday night.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred on Highland Avenue NE at Fairgrove Church Road around 11:25 p.m.

A Hyundai Sonata traveling south on Fairgrove Church Road entered the intersection at a red light and was struck by a Dodge Ram traveling east on Highland Avenue NE.

The driver of the Hyundai, Mauricio Diaz Gomez, 24, of Hickory, died at the scene. A woman and child in the Hyundai were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Dodge and a child in the truck were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police said the initial investigation does not indicate impairment was a factor and no charges will be filed.

The road in the area was closed for approximately two hours while the scene was investigated.
