Student arrested for carrying 'similar' weapon at West Geauga football game; no one was harmed

The West Geauga School District said no one was injured in the incident.

CLEVELAND – A student was arrested Friday night at West Geauga High School's football game against Hawken School in Chesterland for possessing a “similar” replica gun, school officials said.

According to a letter to school families signed by West Geauga High School Principal Ryan Patti and District Superintendent Rich Markwardt, the arrested student was from another school district and was taken into custody after “possessing what appeared to be a firearm “looked like”.

“Upon investigation, it was determined that this was a replica or similar weapon,” officials wrote.

Patti and Markwardt said no one was hurt and that Chester police “responded promptly” and took the student into custody.

“The safety of our students, staff and community members remains our top priority,” they wrote. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities in conducting their investigation. We will provide updates as appropriate, respecting the privacy of those involved and the ongoing legal process.”

3News has reached out to Chester Police for more information about the incident.

District officials said the incident “serves as a reminder of the importance of our safety protocols and the need for continued vigilance.”
