There is 1 fatality in a crash on Highland Avenue NE in Catawba County

According to the NC State Highway Patrol, the road was closed for approximately two hours while the scene was investigated.

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. – A man died in a crash on Highland Avenue NE at Fairgrove Church Road in Catawba County late Friday evening.

The NC State Highway Patrol responded to the accident on Friday, September 27 at approximately 11:25 p.m. A 2013 Hyundai Sonata traveling south on Fairgrove Church Road entered the intersection at a red light and collided with a 2015 Dodge Ram traveling east on Highland Avenue NE.

Mauricio Diaz Gomez, 24, of Hickory, was the driver of the Hyundai and died at the scene. A female passenger and a child were transported to a nearby hospital and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

James Nicholas Walker, 44, of Lenior, was the driver of the Dodge and was transported by EMS to a hospital where he suffered non-life-threatening injuries. A minor passenger was also taken to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The NC State Highway Patrol said the initial investigation does not indicate impairment contributed to the crash and no charges will be filed. The road was closed for approximately two hours while the investigation took place at the scene.
