Norwich student arrested after posting threat to evacuate football match

NORWHICH, CT (WFSB) – A student was arrested Friday night after posting a threat on Snapchat that led to the evacuation of a football game.

The Norwich Police Dispatch Center received a call from the FBI National Threat Operations Section Exigent Threat Research and Analysis Crisis Team regarding an active threat.

The agent stated that the threat was found on Snapchat, where it was reported that a picture was shared from the stands of the football game threatening a shooting.

The threat came as the game entered its final two minutes with an estimated several hundred spectators in attendance, not including student-athletes, band members and cheerleaders.

The entire venue was evacuated and officers conducted a thorough search of the NFA's open building to ensure there was no danger.

The suspect responsible was identified and located using information from the FBI and with assistance from the Norwich Police Department's School Resource Officers.

Although the identity of the suspect could not be identified, police confirmed that a teenager who attends another public school in Norwich was responsible.

The teenager was arrested and the Norwich school principal was notified.

It was decided to keep the student out of class until the education authority examined the matter.
