ForbesToday's “Wordle” No. 1196 with tips, hints and answers for Friday, September 27th

What a beautiful fall weekend it is, even if it is a bit smoky in my area. Lightning struck near the town, starting a wildfire that the Forest Service allowed to burn. Essentially, it is an unplanned, controlled burn. The problem with so many forests is that we have been putting out fires for so long, which has led to overgrowth. Not just trees that are too close together, but also too much flora in general. Too much fuel in dense forests leads to massive wildfires. In a more natural forest area, there will be fires from time to time, clearing the undergrowth and nourishing the soil. Now we are conducting controlled burns to recreate a natural state and bring the forest back to a more natural balance. But smoke is smoke.

Okay, let's do Wordle!

Word analysis

Every day I look at Wordle Bot to analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

Why MOIST, you ask? I have no idea. Sometimes words just come to mind and I think about what comes to mind first. I followed this pretty lousy opening with CRANE and reduced 228 words to just 3. Once again I went with the first thing that came to mind – BRAIN (although I later learned that there were also GRAIN and DRAIN as options). But I'm so smart, with my big BRAIN (or maybe I'm just lucky), that I got the Wordle in three parts. Huzzah!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing three and 0 points for tying the bot. 1 point! Booyah!

How to Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing 1 is worth 3 points; guessing 2 is worth 2 points; guessing 3 is worth 1 point; guessing 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; Guessing on 6 is -2 points and missing the wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If there is a tie you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or simply play for a new score every day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, which means you double your points – positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running list or just play day by day. Enjoy!

Today's Wordle etymology

The word Brain comes from the Old English word brægenwhich referred to the organ in the head. Its origins can be traced further back to Proto-Germanic (Bragnam), and it is probably related to similar words in other Germanic languages, such as Dutch (Brein). The ultimate origin is uncertain, but it may be related to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning “burn” or “bubble,” possibly alluding to the nature or appearance of the brain.
