UPDATE More than a foot of rain fell in some parts of western North Carolina, with 30 inches in some places | News

Many parts of North Carolina received more than a foot of rain over a 48-hour window late in the week, causing “catastrophic flooding in the western part of the state.”

Sugar Grove in Watauga County received 14.81 inches of rain, the highest total recorded in the western half of the state, according to the United States Geological Survey.

In Buncombe County, north of Transylvania County, Bent Creek has received 14.10 inches of rain in the past 48 hours.

The USGS recorded 11.55 inches of rain in Hendersonville, 10.34 inches along the East Fork of the Pidgeon River in Canton and 9.33 inches in Fletcher.

According to North Carolina Emergency Management officials, preliminary rainfall totals indicate that nearly 30 inches of rainfall was recorded in Yancey County, with rainfall totals ranging from 10 to 20 inches across much of the mountains in the western part of the state.
