Multiple arrests following fight at high school football game

WESTLAND (WWJ) Several people were arrested during a brawl at a football game at John Glenn High School in Westland, according to city officials.

Westland police have not confirmed this information.

In a statement on Facebook, Westland Mayor Kevin Coleman said he was “aware of reports of fights that broke out in Wayne following Friday night's (9/27) homecoming game at John Glenn High School in Marquette.

Coleman said officers from neighboring communities were called to the scene because of the “large crowd.”

According to a Facebook statement from City Councilwoman Melissa Sampey, the people arrested were adults.

“Westland Police responded quickly to manage the situation,” Councilman Mike McDermott said on Facebook. “It is a real disgrace and travesty that there are obviously arguments and bad behavior from some people which is affecting the running of the football game.”

According to all three city officials, no students were seriously injured.

“Many students, parents, teachers and community members came just to enjoy the game. “Unfortunately, incidents like this and people’s behavior are affecting what people have there to play, celebrate and enjoy,” McDermott said.

No details have been released about what sparked the dispute.
