The community continues to fight for justice one year after a fatal officer-involved shooting in Decatur

DECATUR, Ala. (WAFF) – The fight continues almost a year to the day after a fatal officer-involved shooting in Decatur.

On Saturday, the family of the late Steve Perkins and community members came together to celebrate a life gone far too soon after he was shot.

Perkins was killed by Decatur police officers on September 29, 2023, after a tow truck driver claimed A man with a gun threatened him during a repossession.

Steve Perkins' widow, Catrela, said the city of Decatur has not been helpful but remains committed to fighting for Steve.

“I want Decatur to know that I feel lost – what the city did to me, to my family, to Steve – they destroyed us,” Perkins said. “But they can’t suppress us.”

Terrance Adkins, a member of Standing in Power, said the celebration was meant to show the importance of every life, not just Steve's.

“Steve's life mattered and it mattered to this community and one of those things we've always said is, 'It could have been any of us,'” Adkins said.

Catrela said she and other community members will continue to fight for Steve until he receives the justice he deserves.
