Police shoot, kill suspect in father's murder after chase from Plano ends in Aurora near RT. 34, Eola Road, state police say

AURORA, Ill. (WLS) — Illinois State Police are investigating a police chase and fatal officer-involved shooting in Aurora against a suspect wanted in a home invasion and murder in Plano.

The family of the 70-year-old murder victim told ABC7 that the suspect in the shooting was the victim's adult son, who later died in the officer-involved shootout.

Multiple police agencies were involved in the initial search for the suspect, which began Friday in Plano.

Shortly before 6:45 p.m., officials said officers from the Kendall County Sheriff's Office responded to assist the Plano Police Department with a report of shots fired in the 3800 block of Pratt Street, the Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

At the crime scene, officers discovered a 70-year-old man in a house who had been shot multiple times. He died from his injuries, Plano police said.

The victim was later identified by the Kendall County Coroner's Office as Russell Novak.

Novak's family told ABC7 that the man's son, who was in his 30s, shot his father.

Responding officers found a car believed to be involved in the fatal shooting in the area. Police pursued the vehicle to the area of ​​Route 34 and Eola Road in Aurora, where officers from multiple agencies encountered the armed suspect who had exited the vehicle, police said.

“Deputies and officers faced with a deadly threat attacked the victim to protect the public and themselves,” a news release said.

The suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at a deputy, which resulted in the deputy and a Plano police officer firing their weapons and shooting at the suspect, an update said Saturday afternoon.

Officers immediately provided medical aid to the suspect, authorities said. The suspect was taken to Rush Copley Hospital in Aurora and pronounced dead, according to ISP.

The deceased suspect has not yet been officially identified by authorities.

The Kendall County Coroner's Office will conduct a forensic autopsy on Russell Novak on Monday.

No officers were injured, police said. There is no ongoing specific threat to the public.

Plano police continue to investigate the Pratt Street homicide, and Illinois State Police continue to investigate the shooting in Aurora involving a Plano officer and a Kendall County deputy.
