33-year-old arrested on murder charges after his father's body was found in Logan Canyon

The son of a 77-year-old man found dead in Logan Canyon has been charged with murder.

Officers from the Cache County Sheriff's Office were called to the snowmobile park in Franklin Basin after the man's body was found.

The man was identified as Dennis Shaw of Logan.

According to a probable cause statement, Shaw was found with multiple stab wounds to the chest and officers said he appeared to have been dragged and taken to the scene.

Investigators believed Shaw was killed somewhere else and taken to the parking lot. They said he was found 25 miles from his home and was at the scene without his vehicle.

The parking lot was closed while investigators processed the crime scene and collected evidence.

Officials said there have been recent calls for Shaw's arrest because of disputes between him and his son, 33-year-old Clayton Shaw.

Clayton Shaw was served with an eviction notice in July from a property owned by his father or his father's trust.

According to Logan City police records, Dennis Shaw reported that his son came to his home in some sort of “mental crisis,” took away his phone and told him that he was “trying to find a way to kill you.” .

On July 24, Dennis Shaw reported his son for domestic violence, and on September 15, a roommate of Clayton Shaw reported she was afraid of him and “wanted to know what her options were.”

Officials said Clayton Shaw suffered from paranoia and was known to carry a firearm.

They said he called police in September about the discovery of human remains. When officers arrived at the scene, they said it appeared to be tree bark.

An employee at Dennis Shaw's company told officers they had not seen him since about 4 p.m. Thursday and were concerned about his condition.

The man told officers that Clayton Shaw had previously made a hatchet and threatened to kill his father.

Investigators began surveillance of Dennis Shaw's home, where they saw Clayton Shaw go to the door, knock and then drive away.

They conducted what they called a “high-risk traffic stop” during which they found a blade consistent with the elder Shaw's injuries.

During a search of the vehicle, police found cleaning fluid and drops of human blood in the trunk.

Shaw was taken to the Cache County Sheriff's Office for questioning, where officials said he denied killing his father.

Officials said there was enough evidence to charge Shaw with murder.

Investigators have asked anyone who may have seen anything or have information about the victim, his white Ford F-150 truck or Clayton Shaw's black BMW to call the sheriff's office at 435-755-1100.

Officials said the Franklin Basin parking lot has since reopened.
