Multiple fatalities reported after small plane crashes at Wright Brothers Memorial Airfield – The Virginian-Pilot

A fiery plane crash late Saturday afternoon left several people dead as the pilot attempted to land at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills.

Witnesses reported seeing the single-engine plane attempting to land on the monument's primary airstrip before crashing into the forest around 5 p.m. The plane then caught fire, National Park Service spokesman Michael Barber said in a news release.

“Several passenger deaths have been confirmed,” he said.

The park service did not release the model of the plane or say where it flew from.

The Wright Brothers Memorial will remain closed Sunday and the First Flight Airstrip, a 3,000-foot strip at the birthplace of flight, is closed until further notice, Barber said.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident and the FAA has been notified.
