3 people were arrested after an altercation with Livingston County officers at Shaquille O'Neal's chicken restaurant

(CBS DETROIT) – Three people were arrested after an altercation with Livingston County sheriff's deputies during Shaquille O'Neal's visit to his restaurant.

The Livingston County Sheriff's Office said officers assisted O'Neal with his visit to his Hartland Township restaurant, Big Chicken, on Friday afternoon.

Before O'Neal arrived, a 21-year-old man got into an argument with a police officer. The deputy deescalated the situation and continued security measures, authorities say.

A passerby later told officers the Howell man made offensive comments and believed he had a gun in his backpack.

The sheriff's office said a deputy attempted to make contact with the man, who then “attacked” him.

The deputy then pulled out his Taser. A 48-year-old woman who was with the man attempted to disarm the deputy. According to the sheriff's office, the woman and her 21-year-old daughter obstructed the deputy in detaining the man.

Two other officers tried to move the two women out of the way. As they moved, the two women fell to the ground. According to the sheriff's office, the man then attacked one of the deputies and attempted to put him in a chokehold.

The other two deputies fired their Tasers, but they had no effect. The three officers handcuffed the man and took him into custody.

The two women were also arrested after attempting to resist and flee authorities.

The deputy who was attacked suffered minor injuries.

The sheriff's office was contacted by O'Neal's public relations team an hour before the event and advised that the visit was not supposed to be public, but the information had been leaked and a large crowd was expected.

Due to late notification and a homecoming parade, the sheriff's office was unable to schedule enough deputies.

According to authorities, there were more than 250 people in the restaurant during O'Neal's visit.
