Woman charged with attempted murder in stabbing 4-year-old to death in North Jersey

A Paterson woman was charged with attempted murder this week after stabbing a 4-year-old in the city last month, authorities said.

Mabel Campechano, 27, was arrested Wednesday following a joint investigation by the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office Special Victims Unit and the Paterson Police Department. According to a press release from the prosecutor's office, in addition to attempted first-degree murder, she is also charged with child endangerment and weapons possession.

Paterson police responded to a home in the area of ​​East 24th Street and 10th Avenue on Aug. 23 and discovered a child who had been stabbed multiple times, the release said. The victim was taken to St. Joseph's University Medical Center for treatment and was later listed in stable condition.

The public prosecutor's office did not provide any information about the possible relationship between Campechano and the child.

If convicted, Campechano faces 10 to 20 years in prison on the attempted murder charge and three to five years on the child endangerment and weapons possession charges.

She is being held at the Bergen County Jail. The state has filed a motion for pretrial detention to be heard by a Supreme Court judge.
