One dead, four hospitalized after high-speed crash on Southwest Side involving impaired drivers | Arizona News

TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – A 19-year-old man has died and four others are hospitalized after a high-speed crash involving two impaired drivers on the Southwest Side.

Just before 2:30 a.m. early Saturday morning, officers and firefighters responded to the intersection near I-10 Frontage Rd and W Silverlake Rd for reports of a two-car accident.

The driver and five passengers of a Chevrolet Silverado were taken to the hospital with varying degrees of injuries.

The slightly injured driver of a Kia and her uninjured passenger remained at the scene after the accident.

Shortly after traffic detectives began their investigation, they were informed that one of the Silverado's passengers had succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.

The passenger was identified as 19-year-old Risten Lee Robinson.

According to TPD, evidence indicates the Kia was traveling west on W. Silverlake Rd and then turned left to head south on Frontage Rd. At the same time, the Silverado was traveling south on Frontage Road. at high speed when it crashed into the rear of the Kia.

The impact caused the Silverado to spin and roll over, ejecting the five passengers.

Both drivers were examined for impairment and officers determined that both were impaired by alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the crash.

TPD believes excessive speed and impaired driving by the driver of the Silverado are the primary causes.

This remains an ongoing investigation. There are no criminal charges or citations pending at this time.
