What is that noise? A private fireworks show in Tacoma

The private fireworks show began at around 9pm on a barge in Commencement Bay and lasted about 20 minutes.

TACOMA, Wash. – A private fireworks display took place near the Port of Tacoma on Saturday evening, echoing for miles and surprising some local residents.

The private fireworks display began at around 9pm on a barge in Commencement Bay and lasted about 20 minutes.

Chelsea Shepherd, public information officer for the Tacoma Fire Department, said the fire department was aware of the report and had the fireboat Destiny on standby.

The United States Coast Guard alerted the public on September 25 with a notice of the event. The Coast Guard established a temporary water safety zone near the fireworks display from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday.

The safety zone is intended to protect people, ships and the marine environment in the waters during the fireworks display.
