Central Florida deputy killed in fatal crash

Earlier this month, a Central Florida deputy died in a fatal accident.

It is with deep sadness and compassion that Sheriff Chad Chronister and the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office announce the loss of a deputy following a recent fatal accident.

Deputy Darell Brown, 40, was tragically killed in a collision with a semi-truck on US Highway 301 north of Stacy Road in Thonotosassa at approximately 7:45 a.m. on September 19, 2024.

Brown joined HCSO in January 2015 and faithfully served his community as a detention representative at both detention centers. He most recently worked in the booking department at Orient Road Prison.

“Our hearts break for Deputy Brown’s family, friends and loved ones as they cope with this incredible loss,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “This tragedy comes at an incredibly difficult time as our sheriff’s office continues to grieve the loss of Deputy White. I humbly ask the community to pray for everyone affected by these painful losses. Deputy Brown was more than just a colleague; He was a friend, a mentor and a source of inspiration to many. His genuine warmth, dedication and compassionate spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.”

Deputy Brown was off duty and driving his personal vehicle at the time of the accident.

The Florida Highway Patrol will conduct the crash investigation.
